Archives Council of Nunavut urges completion of NMAC soon

Monday, February 25th, 2013

Archives Council of Nunavut: “During a tour of IBC’s current film and video storage facility, ACN members were extremely concerned to view such an amazing collection of valuable information open to rapid deterioration. We know that IBC staff do their very best at this time with what is available to them but without a proper facility, migration of film to more modern carriers, controlled humidity, fire safe containers and proper documentation, much of this information could soon be lost for ever.

“The Archives Council of Nunavut is in full support of the campaign by the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation to build a New Media Arts Centre and especially one housing a dedicated area for Inuit Film and Video Archives. It is of utmost importance to Nunavut as a Territory and the preservation of Inuit knowledge that this Media Preservation Centre is built and in operation as soon as possible.”

Piksuk Media: “We are pleased to renew our strong support for proposals to complete the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation’s Nunavut Media Arts Centre. … The NMAC will enhance IBC’s ability to provide Inuit language television and new media programming.  … I have no doubt that the proposed NMAC would provide both the improved technical capacity for proper training and a state-of-the-art facility for use by other filmmakers and producers from Nunavut, including Piksuk Media, and those from other parts of Canada and beyond. …We know that the public will have access to the facilities in a variety of ways including access to 40 years of archival footage, unique in the world, and catalogued and managed in the Inuit Film and Video Archive.” Piksuk Media Inc. – January 16, 2013 – Letter of Support
